Revised Afghan Women’s Asylum Process by SEM Amid Crisis

On their website on July 10, 2023, the Swiss Refugee Aid Organization writes about the change in asylum policy in Switzerland concerning Afghan women in the country:

July 10, 2023: According to a statement, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) has adjusted the asylum practice for women and girls from Afghanistan: „The situation of women and girls in Afghanistan has progressively worsened in various aspects of life since the Taliban’s assumption of power. The numerous restrictions and imposed behaviors have significant implications for their fundamental human rights and severely curtail their basic rights. Against this backdrop, female asylum seekers from Afghanistan can be considered victims of discriminatory legislation (belonging to a specific social group) as well as religiously motivated persecution, and they are entitled to refugee status, provided there are no other motives for persecution. The SEM will continue to assess their applications on a case-by-case basis.“
